The voltage detector detects ac and dc voltages through a long-life carbide tip, which is protected by a plastic cap when not in use. To use simply place the carbide tip on the object in question, and press the magnetic trigger, and observe the LED s. If the green LED illuminates, the surface being touched is free from electrical hazards. If the red LED flashes, dangerous voltage is present.

Voltage Detectors are recommended for use in the field when working near potential dangerous objects including:
Transformer cases, Circuit breaker housings, Power ground wires, Street light fixtures, Mobile homes, Metal frameworks, Metal conduit, Pedestals, Newly-driven ground rods, Metallic sided homes, and electrical machinery.
